Fresh cans, playsets and squishy new compounds — every one picked by the people who make the dough.

Since the first can

Every era of Play-Doh has its own lid color in our heads. Here they are, one lid at a time — from a cleaning putty in Cincinnati to the shelves on this site.

  1. 1930s

    Putty for wallpaper

Kutol Products in Cincinnati sells a soft, reusable putty that lifts coal soot off wallpaper. It is not a toy yet. It is a chore.

  2. 1956

    One color, one can

The putty is reworked for children and goes on sale as Play-Doh. The first cans hold a single off-white dough, and that's enough to start a habit.

  3. 1957

    Red arrives

Red, yellow and blue join the off-white. Suddenly a table can hold a sunset, a fire truck and a sky at the same time.

  4. Fun Factory years

    Push, squeeze, out it comes

Presses and extruders turn dough into ribbons, stars and noodles. The tools become as famous as the cans.

  5. 1991

    Joining Hasbro

Play-Doh becomes part of Hasbro. Playsets grow into kitchens, salons and dentist chairs.

  6. 2018

    A smell with paperwork

The scent everyone recognizes is registered as a trademark: sweet, a little musky, vanilla-like, with a whisper of cherry and salted wheat dough.

  7. Now

    New textures on the table

Cloud slime, super stretch slime, slow foam, air dry clay and Blooms bouquet kits sit beside the classic cans.

The can still makes the same little pop. Kids notice it before they notice the color.
