Play-Doh by age: what to buy at 2, 3, 5 and up
Ages on our boxes are about small parts and hand skills. Here is how we would choose for each stage.

Age 2: just the dough
Our compound cans are made for ages 2 and up. At this age the dough itself is the toy: squeezing, poking and tearing build hand strength. A four-pack of classic colors or a fun tub with a few big tools is plenty. Stay close for the first sessions, because toddlers still taste things.
Age 3: tools and pretend play
Most playsets start at 3. This is when rollers, cutters and presses start to click, and pretend play takes off. Kitchen Creations sets, the dentist and barber shop in Pretend Play, and preschool character sets like Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Bluey and Peppa all fit here.
Age 4 to 5: figures and challenges
Bendy action figure sets from Marvel, Star Wars and the Ninja Turtles are usually made for 4 and up. Scented cloud slime and super stretch slime arrive around this age too, along with challenge sets like Play-Doh Squished for 5 and up.
Age 6 and up: making to keep
Older kids often want something they can keep. Air dry clay hardens overnight and can be painted. Flower kits and Blooms bouquet kits in Blooms & Flowers suit patient makers and grown-ups who want a calm project of their own.
